Members of the same church, these two Ugandan transplants began talking and found out they also attended the same college.

The Meet Cute: Born and raised in Uganda, Sharn and Malcolm moved seperately to Massachusetts to attend to University of Massachusetts Lowell. They also frequented the same local church, Global Evangelical Church. At church, they began talking and found out they were students at the same college.

The Engagement: Malcolm had a private room set up for the proposal at Davio’s Northern Italian Steakhouse, filling it with their family and close friends. “She didn’t expect anything,” Malcolm says.

The Outfits: It’s Uganda tradition for the bride to change outfits throughout the night, so Sharn went from a white off-the-shoulder dress during the ceremony, modified the look by removing the sleeves for the reception, then ended the night in a shimmering silver number. Malcom went from a white suit with black sleeve hems and collar to a velvety suit with bedazzled sleeve hems. The bridal party dressed to match, changing from white to black and gray attire.

The Dancers: Every guest was on their feet throughout the night, and part of the reason for that was the presence of cultural dancers performing traditional dances from Uganda. The dancers are also good friends of the couple and made the night lively as they helped celebrate their nuptials on the dance floor.

The Highlights: Sharn and Malcolm will always reminisce and appreciate every part of the ceremony. “Both of us loved saying our vows,” Malcolm says. “The other moment I loved personally was our first dance. That was magical. There was a fog machine and we had a beautiful song.”

The Advice: Even though Sharn and Malcolm wish a couple things could have gone differently with a better weather forecast – like having the music by the water during the cocktail hour, or having candles run down the aisle – the two didn’t let it ruin their day. “The wedding is about you and it’s about your friends and family, but you should try to enjoy your day much as you can,” Malcom says. “You put in two years or so of planning, so try to enjoy it, no matter what happens. At the end of the day, if you want to break the bank, then break the bank!”
