We call them “Man’s Best Friend” and yet, our pups aren’t necessarily expected to stand (or sit) by our sides at the altar. At first glance that might be understandable; taking on the responsibilities of the best man or maid of honor is a pretty tall order for a four legged, non-English speaking individual. However, that doesn’t mean your fur baby should be stuck at home or with a sitter on such a momentous occasion. Fido has probably been with you and your partner through most of your relationship, even helping you through your lowest of lows, so it makes sense for him to be around to witness your highest of highs.
Benny and Jack, a Wakefield-based dog market that opened in July 2015 and was recently named “Best New Pet Store” in Rhode Island Monthly’s 2016 Best of Rhode Island Awards, believes and understands that the connection we have with our dogs is one of the most important bonds we form in life.
“Having a better understanding of our pets’ health and happiness is critical to strengthening that connection. We strive to create an environment where the dog/human bond is strengthened by embracing our “Four Paws Promise” in everything we do: Quality, Community, Humane and Local,” says owner Rachel Bilow. “Some of the services we offer include general nutrition consultation, functional product assistance, group training classes, pet photography, organized pack walks and events, in store adoption events and referrals to local dog services.”
What’s more, Benny and Jack can specifically prepare your pooch to be on their best behavior come wedding-day. And they have options!
-
Schedule customized 1-on-1 sessions based on your dog’s specific needs for your big day so they can successfully take part. These can include proper sit and stay behavior, well-controlled loose leash walk, providing positive associations to scary new experiences (i.e. photo flashes, lots of people, clapping, etc.) and curbing unwanted behaviors such as jumping and barking.
-
Look into their additional training sessions, available as singles or as packages.
-
Attend ongoing small group classes for both beginners and intermediates which focus on basic obedience as well as curbing problem behaviors.
-
Work with trainers to customize a schedule to ensure your dog is comfortable with his or her attire as well as the events of the day (i.e. taking photos).
-
Get referrals to well-reputed local boarding/in home doggie sitters so you’ll know Fido is in good hands for your reception and/or honeymoon
But that’s not all they provide. “Every product we have is here for a reason,” Bilow says. “Everything you’ll find in our store and online is carefully curated and trusted and serves at least one of three main purposes: food, exercise and structure.” Plus the added bonus that Fido will look just as stylin’ as their human bridal party counterparts. Here’s a preview:
Bow-ties and flower collars – handmade in Hope Valley, RI
Nautical rope leashes – handmade in Jamestown, RI
Various patterned collar and leash sets to fit any theme wedding – made in RI and MA
