Tell us about your day: Divine intervention! Somehow everything was calm, relaxed and beautiful, just perfect. Originally from Warwick I knew I was coming back to my home state to be married. Patrick and I (Patrick mostly…I hail from the typical five RI generations, very few have ever left) had guests coming from all over the country and world and I my only demand was to have our guests fall in love with Rhode Island.
Such a gem of a state, I was excited for some many to experience Rhode Island. Even though we were to be married in Bristol at St. Mary’s and Blithewold, Patrick, many of our far traveling guests and I stayed in Newport for the week. We stayed at a home on Clarke Street near the beautiful Vanderbilt Grace Hotel, which was ironically the Peleg Barker House, justice of the peace ca. 1759. The week was full of Rhody Musts – Del’s, Alli’s, Stuffies, Cliff Walk, Ocean Drive views, clam cakes and chowda, sunsets at Vanderbilt rooftop bar, boat rides to Jamestown, cliff jumping and the lists goes on.
We hosted a 100-person welcome dinner at Middletown’s Atlantic Beach Club the night before and we eagerly awaited our wedding day, a late August gem with great weather, temperature and location, location location. The 200-person reception at Blithewold still has people talking. People were just blown away by the mansion, the garden, the grounds, tidal compass (the surfers loved that!) and Narragansett Bay. Many guests (including the visitors from Hawaii) say that Rhode Island’s unexpected beauty and character is one of the best vacations they have ever had.
