Aisle Say: A Tailor Who Fits

Aisle Say: A Tailor Who Fits

I love the framed vintage Vogue covers and pages of Godey’s Lady’s Book hanging on the walls at Terry’s shop.

When it comes to weddings, it’s all about the dress (am I wrong?). Every bride wants that perfect gown, one that represents her and her own unique sense of self. No matter how hard you search, or even when you find “the one,” there’s always something you wish you could change. It’s written in stone (somewhere) that every bride must put in the work to find her ideal dress, but what about the alterations? You can’t leave your treasure with just anyone!

My gown, in particular, needs a lot of work. So the next thing on my list was to find the perfect seamstress. I was on the hunt for someone who could understand my vision, embrace my personality and use his/her knowledge of fabric to spin my dreams into thread and transform my vintage gown. I knew I wanted someone with couture fashion expertise, specifically in the realm of vintage silk organza. I needed a tasteful tailor with a bit of flair, but also a professional with whom I felt comfortable. After making multiple phone calls, one after the other, I stumbled upon a small business on Facebook called Alter Ego Custom Tailoring. The name was so kitschy and cute I had to give them a call. A kind woman named Terry picked up and answered every question I had without hesitation. I immediately made an appointment.

When I walked into her Victorian house I was greeted by vintage Vogue covers and fashion pages from Godey’s Lady’s Book framed as art: I was in love. I knew I could trust her sense of style. Terry was straightforward and made everything simple. Even my mother was impressed. Twirling in my gown, watching my reflection in the biggest mirror I have ever seen, I felt safe. Later we talked details, discussed prices, and I decided to give her my business. I left with a smile.

I’ve started down the road to what I know will be success. I’m looking forward to the next time we meet. Leaving your wedding dress with a stranger can be a really hard thing to do, but it wasn’t for me: I trust it’s in good hands.

Thank you for your kind words, I can’t wait to get started on your dress. I know this will be my most fun project for this year. We will definitely do before and after pictures!
